President’s Message

Fall 2023

I'm pleased to announce this year's line-up of programs.  Our board members have been busy planning and recruiting some great speakers.  We're offering 16-hours of CPE in Harrisonburg between October and next April!

All of our lunch meetings will be held in the Sunnyside Communities Corporate Office Board Room which is conveniently located at 600 University Blvd next to Costco.  Our lunch meetings last approximately 90-minutes during which time you have an opportunity to eat lunch, interact with area accountants, and earn an hour of CPE!  Everyone is welcome at our meetings whether you’re an IMA member or not.

We’re kicking off the year on October 19th with Ted Browning from the JMU School of Accounting.  He will be speaking on Environmental, Social, and Governance.  In November, we’re excited to feature speakers from two area not-for-profit organizations – Shannon Porter, Executive Director of Mercy House and Nate Riddle, Executive Director of Open Doors.

We’re holding a half-day seminar on Thursday, December 14th at PBMares which will consist of a 2-hour tax update, an update on the new lease standard, and a presentation on the wine industry followed by a social and wine tasting.  Also, mark your calendars for April 18, 2024 for an 8-hour session which will include the Virginia required Ethics course.

We use proceeds from our full and half-day CPE events to fund scholarships that we award to accounting students at our local colleges and universities.  The board has approved to award up to four $1,000 scholarships this academic year!  Applications have been distributed to area colleges, and recipients will be recognized at our student meeting in February.

Chapter board members Chris Dastoli and Debbie Galway recently represented IMA at an Accounting Student Night at Laurel Ridge Community College in Middletown.  We enjoyed talking to college and high school students who are interested in a career in accounting.  Chris gave an excellent presentation on the benefits of becoming a Certified Management Accountant, and there were a number of students who were interested in learning more about the exam.

We hope you’ll make plans to join us in the coming months for some great CPE and fellowship with other area accountants!
